One of the best parts of this Cupcake Challenge is discovering bakeries that are new to me. Walking into a new bakery is like walking into a super secret club. Will it be amazing? Do my eyes bulge out of my head? That is a very good sign I’m hooked for life. Little Cupcake Bake Shop is tucked away on a quietish corner in SoHo and it’s moody lighting makes me want to curl up with a book and a cupcake and escape for a bit. I went with an atypical cupcake and it kept me guessing the whole time. I opted for a Black & White since chocolate and vanilla has seemed to have taken over this blog. The amazing uniform swirl that tops these cupcakes is made even more impressive by the ying-yang style going on here. Also, this may be the lightest cupcake I have ever held in my extremely large hands.
Look at this cupcake. I mean, do see that uniform swirl? Like I said, it’s a ying-yang cupcake and I’m feeling the balance. This frosting is out of this world. Seriously amazing. Light and fluffy, and although the cake was very dry, the frosting more than makes up for it. Not your typical buttercream, but I’m happy for the change. Now the cake is a different story. Dry, very subtle chocolate flavor, and although it had a fine crumb the dryness overpowered everything. Which makes me sad. Because the frosting was so amazing. The cake:frosting ratio was on point; perfect amount, but the frosting overpowers the dry cake. Still. I have mixed feelings about this cake because I really wanted to like it. I mean I’m still in love with this frosting. But the cake. Ugh the cake was a big letdown. Which makes Sarah a sad panda. I’m ready to be a happy panda so I’m taking on a cupcake giant next.
